Outing / Event Description

Peace in Nature at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve with Docents Michael and Prahlada | 8.3.13

3, 2013

1:30 PM TO 5:30 PM
Status: Closed

Please join us for a hike in the beautiful and diverse Bohemia Ecological Preserve.  The diversity of plant life is amazing here, from open grasslands to wooded stream beds.  Along the way, we will stop and linger in several of these distinctive habitats.  Together, we will sit down and be silent for a while, perhaps for ten or fifteen minutes in each special place.

Depending on the weather, our meditation stops may include the cool redwoods along upper Duvoul Creek, the sunny grasslands and views at the “Top of the World”, the oak woodlands, the serpentine chaparral, and more.   It is striking, for example, how there is chaparral and redwood forest within such close proximity to one another.

The hike will be at a mild pace, approximately 3 to 4 miles.  There are some significant ups and downs (about 800 feet elevation gain), plus some rougher trail sections where people seldom go (flatter, but almost off-trail). Please wear good shoes for hiking, bring lots of water, and also bring warm and cool layers for the diverse microclimates we will experience!

Geared toward adults, but younger folks who are comfortable sitting in silence for ten or fifteen minutes are very welcome.

Note on timing:  We will do our best to get back to our vehicles by 5:30 pm.  However, it is possible we will get back later than intended.  If you have plans directly after this hike that you cannot miss this may not be the outing for you.  Early departures cannot be accommodated.  Thank you for your understanding!

Hike Details: Please come prepared for a light to moderate hike with some uneven terrain (approx 3-4 miles).

When and Where:
We will meet at 12:30 pm on Saturday August 3rd at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve, just past Westminster Woods.  From the intersection of Graton Road and Bohemian Highway in Occidental, travel approximately 3 miles north on Bohemian Highway. The Preserve is on the right-hand side (if you are coming from Occidental) & looks like a quarry.    Watch for staff or volunteers located at Bohemian Highway to direct you to parking!

What to bring:  Sturdy boots or shoes, weather appropriate clothing in layers, snacks/picnic lunch & plenty of water, binoculars, sunscreen, hat, small blanket or towel to sit on if you wish.

 Details, Details:

  • You will be asked to sign a liability waiver.
  • There is one porta-potty on the property (2/3 mile into our hike).  There is no potable water available on the property.
  • No pets or smoking are permitted and absolutely no smoking pets!
  • We will stay together as a group & leave together.  Early departures cannot be accommodated except in case of medical emergency.
