If in doubt about the conditions, call 707.544.7284 on Saturday after 8:00am. If there is no special message, the outing is a go as planned.
Our watersheds, like the blood vessels in our bodies, channel life to the land and support our biosphere. Maintaining their integrity is critical to the success of the flora and fauna through which they flow. The watersheds of the Bohemia Ecological Preserve, Margaret’s Creek, Duvoul Creek and Grubb Creek, flow together into Dutch Bill Creek and connect with the Russian River and Pacific Ocean. Hence, the watershed provides much needed spawning habitat for salmon and other aquatic creatures and nourishes a forest of diverse plant life. On this hike we will visit three of the 4 BEP creeks and discuss their health, their unique contribution to the overall watershed and restoration plans and efforts currently underway.
From the parking lot off Bohemian Highway we will first visit Dutch Bill Creek before we carpool up to Hut Hill (4 wheel drive vehicles are better suited to the road conditions). From there, we’ll hike to Duvoul to visit the waterfall and stop for lunch on our return. At 4 Corners, we’ll head straight to join up with Margaret’s Creek, eventually making a circle to return to Hut Hill and carpool back down to the parking area.
Details We will spend most of our day hiking & exploring the preserve. Please come prepared for a moderate to strenuous 4-5 mile hike. This
hike is geared towards those who are able to walk for miles on wet trails
and over slippery rocks and who are comfortable fording creeks. Hiking
poles are recommended as are water-resistant hiking boots. We will need a few people to volunteer to drive us up to Hut Hill from the parking area.
When and Where: We will meet at 10AM on Saturday, February 25th at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve, 6773 Bohemian Hwy just past Westminster Woods. From the intersection of Graton Road and Bohemian Highway in Occidental, travel approximately 3 miles north on Bohemian Highway. The Preserve is on the right-hand side (if you are coming from Occidental) & looks like a quarry. Watch for staff or volunteers located at Bohemian Highway to direct you to parking!
What to bring:
Bring water, snacks, picnic lunch, warm clothing in layers, hiking poles, sturdy shoes, rain gear if needed, anotebook and pen if you wish, and a group spirit that allows us to stay together and have fun!
You will be asked to sign a liability waiver.
Workshops are limited to small groups for more hands-on experience
There is one porta-potty on the property. There is no potable water available on the property.
No pets or smoking are permitted and absolutely no smoking pets!
We will stay together as a group & leave together. Early departures cannot be accommodated except in case of medical emergency.
