Hike Docents are instrumental in providing public access opportunities and creating a vibrant People Powered Preserve. Hike Docents will, after a thorough training process, take on the duties of leading hikes scheduled for the public at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve. Hike Docents will share information about the 1000-acre preserve and guide hikers on fun and informative tours through the property.
The first training date is scheduled for Saturday, March 11th from 9AM – 2PM
at the preserve. This will be the first in a series of trainings
designed to prepare volunteers to lead hikes at the Bohemia Ecological
Preserve. Please see below for a training schedule and other program
Commitment: • Hike Docents must commit to the Hike Docent Program for at least one year. • Hike Docents must commit to leading a minimum of 4 guided hikes each year. • Leading a Bohemia Ecological Preserve hike takes approximately 4 hours.
Training: • Hike Docents are required to attend two training days: Saturday, March 11th 9AM – 2PM
Saturday, March 18th 9AM-2PM
• Hike Docents are required to attend at least 3 on-site enrichment courses throughout the year. These courses will be taught by experts in the unique ecology and natural history of the Bohemia Ecological Preserve. • Hike Docents will “apprentice” on at least one staff-led hike prior to leading public hikes at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve. • After this “apprenticeship”, Hike Docents will co-lead Bohemia Ecological Preserve hikes and LandPaths staff will not be present. • Hike Docents must acquire a 1st Aid / CPR certification.
Cost: • Participation in the first two trainings is free of charge. • Participation in subsequent enrichment courses will cost approximately $20 for each course. Scholarships are available. • 1st Aid / CPR training will be paid for by the volunteer.
Prior to the training: • Volunteer should be able to comfortably walk or hike at least 5 miles on hilly terrain. • Volunteers should be comfortable presenting to small groups.
When and Where: We will meet at 9am on Saturday March 11th & 18th at the Bohemia Ecological Preserve,
6773 Bohemian Hwy, just past Westminster Woods. From the intersection of Graton Road and
Bohemian Highway in Occidental, travel approximately 3 miles north on
Bohemian Highway. The Preserve is on the right-hand side (if you are
coming from Occidental) & looks like a quarry. Watch for staff or
volunteers located at Bohemian Highway to direct you to parking!
What to bring:Sturdy boots or shoes, weather appropriate clothes in layers (we will be outdoors all day), picnic lunch
notebook & pen, walking stick or hiking poles if you wish.
You will be asked to sign a liability waiver.
There is one porta-potty on the property
There is no potable water available on the property.
No pets or smoking are permitted and absolutely no smoking pets!
We will stay together as a group
& leave together. Early departures cannot be accommodated except in
case of medical emergency.
