JOB TITLE: Young Steward
CLASSIFICATION: Part-time; Non-exempt/volunteer position
HOURS: 1 day per week; 3-month commitment required with potential for extension
START/END DATE: Check back Summer 2022 for application and start dates
SALARY: Unpaid; Paid positions ($15.50/hour) available based on financial need
REPORTS TO: Community Stewardship Manager
Position Summary
LandPaths seeks 12 individuals between 14 and 24, with an interest in getting outdoors. Successful candidates will work alongside the LandPaths stewardship crew in the field and learn multiple facets of land stewardship through direct hands-on experience. Management themes may include weed and forest management, trail building, biological monitoring, erosion control, and volunteer engagement.
LandPaths oversees six nature preserves throughout Sonoma County equaling approximately 2,400 acres. LandPaths is a Sonoma County non-profit organization dedicated to connecting people to the land by offering equitable open space access, leading outdoor outings, providing environmental educational to both adults and children, and encouraging land stewardship through volunteer workdays.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Able to participate every Friday or Saturday from 8am-2:30pm for at least 3 months
- Ability to hike at least 5 miles over uneven terrain carrying heavy tools in possible inclement weather
- Have reliable transportation to and from job sites every week
- Positive attitude and genuine interest in land stewardship
- Ability to work in a team comprised of other youth crew members, LandPaths’ staff, and volunteers
- Participants under 18 will need a guardian’s permission
- High Schoolers will need a work permit before the first day of work

- Forest management/Fuel reduction
- Grassland restoration
- Lead crews during drop-in volunteer stewardship workdays (when Covid safe)
- Invasive species removal using a variety of hand and power tools
- Trail building and/or maintenance
- Rare plant monitoring
- GPS Mapping
- Native seed collection
- Post-fire restoration
- Crew management and logistics
