Anastacia C. felt nervous when she first headed out on this year’s Vamos a Yosemite con LandPaths. She’d never been there before; she wasn’t sure what to expect.
“I was very scared,” said Anastacia, who signed on for three days of camping, hiking, swimming, and exploration with her two teenage sons.
Anastacia’s family and another family traveled to the national park from Sonoma County in vehicles provided by LandPaths and driven by our staff. When she arrived in their Yosemite Valley campground, Anastacia said, “There is such peace and tranquility felt being surrounded by these mountains.”
By the end of the trip, Anastacia’s initial outlook had changed: “On the last day, I did not want to come back!” she said. “I had a lot of fun and so did my two boys. We got to know a very special place and one of my sons said his favorite part of the trip was the mountains.”
How Vamos a Yosemite Began
For more than five years, LandPaths has been taking families to Yosemite once a year; it’s a highly anticipated adventure. The trips originally started after a longtime volunteer at Bayer Farm suggested the idea to New Audiences Manager Omar Gallardo.
It was a great idea that continues all these years later! In 2022, 26 people, including eight participants new to LandPaths, made the trip. Many were first-time visitors to Yosemite Valley and first-time campers. The trip was a chance to experience the awe and wonder of the majestic valley and mountains, build community, and deepen their connection to the land.
A Weekend of Fun, Relaxation, and Community Engagement
The weekend was hot and splashing around in the Merced River was a definite crowd favorite. At the Indian Village they learned more about the Ahwahneechee People, the original inhabitants of Yosemite Valley. Later, they visited the Yosemite Indian Museum and learned about basket weaving, toolmaking, and the history of the local tribes. Families appreciated learning about indigenous history of Yosemite and found similarities to their own cultures. There was joy and playfulness for participants of all ages as Ben, Indigenous Park Ranger taught the group how to use an acorn cap as a whistle.
On the last night of the trip, Lesly Caballero, our Senior Bilingual Education Field Specialist, led the group on a night hike guided by the moonlight. She taught environmental education in Yosemite for five years, and her knowledge and connection of the place allowed her to provide such a rich experience in Spanish for our Vamos Afuera families.
Other activities during the trip were lunch at the Upper Merced River, a Polar Bear Plunge Challenge, a Spanish language Junior Ranger swear in with Ranger Shelton Johnson, hugging giant sequoias and learning about their ecology, and a hike along the El Capitan Meadow. Oh, and one last plunge in the Merced before the group headed home – tired, happy, and ready to tell all their family and friends about the amazing time they had in the awe-inspiring nature of Yosemite Valley with Vamos Afuera con LandPaths!
Vamos a Yosemite Con LandPaths 2022 – En Español
Anastacia C. se sintió nerviosa cuando participó por primera vez en el viaje de Vamos a Yosemite con LandPaths este año. Ella nunca había estado allí antes; no estaba segura de qué esperar.
“Estaba muy asustada”, dijo Anastacia, quien se inscribió para tres días de campamento, caminatas y exploración con sus dos hijos adolescentes.
La familia de Anastacia y otra familia viajaron al parque nacional desde el condado de Sonoma en vehículos proporcionados por LandPaths y conducidos por nuestro personal. Cuando llegaron al campamento en el valle de Yosemite, Anastacia dijo: “Se siente tanta paz y tranquilidad al estar rodeada por estas montañas”.

Cómo Comenzó en viaje Vamos a Yosemite
Durante más de cinco años, LandPaths ha llevado familias a Yosemite una vez al año; es una aventura muy esperada. Los viajes comenzaron originalmente después de que un voluntario de mucho tiempo en Bayer Farm le sugiriera la idea al Gerente de Nuevas Audiencias, Omar Gallardo.

Un fin de semana de Diversión, Relajación y Comunidad
El fin de semana fue caluroso y pasar tiempo en el río Merced definitivamente fue una de las actividades favoritas. En el Indian Village aprendieron más sobre el pueblo Ahwahneechee, el pueblo indígena del valle de Yosemite. Más tarde, visitaron el Indian Museum de Yosemite y aprendieron sobre la cestería, la fabricación de herramientas y la historia de los pueblos indígenas locales. Las familias apreciaron aprender sobre la historia indígena de Yosemite y encontraron similitudes con sus propias culturas.
